Bunnies happened. Lots of them. They're only three inches tall, made with 4ply on needles that look like cocktail sticks, free pattern courtesy of the lovely <a href="http://littlecottonrabbits.typepad.co.uk/free_knitting_patterns/" target="_blank">Julie</a> and used with her permission to raise funds for Church - we're buying a ring of bells and they cost a lot...<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Especially en masse, or in pretty glass dishes. They were quite hard to give away. I may have to make more so I can put lots in a glass dish and look at them. Or not because, you know, I am a responsible grown up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made some felt brooches as well: dogs and birdies and one rather spectacular bee, because they were quicker than bunnies.</div>

Stitch and Chat nights (this is March but they happened in April and May too, it's just that I wasn't so handy with my camera when it came to it...). There was an Advent Calendar workshop sometime in May, you can see the sample hanging on the curtains at the back of the photo above. I forgot to take photos then too, bad me.<br />

...the banner for Oakwood Avenue Community Primary School (yes, you do have to say all the words because I had to sew around every one of those letters. Lots of them are the naughty letters with holes in them, so that means you have to sew around the inside of the hole too. That's like two letters in one. My machine played up like you wouldn't believe and I had to use the machine that's supposed to be the less-good machine instead. Which also played up, but in a manner for which I could compensate. I did not enjoy this part of the banner, can you tell?<br />

Liked this bit though. I also got to say quite often, "I'm just going home to make a child," which I found amusing.<br />
<br />
The Oakwood banner is soon to be delivered to its new home, and once it's been safely received I'll do a full post about it. Suffice to say, it's the first school or church banner I've made since I've been working full time and it's also going to be the last. It completely took over my thoughts. Even when I was knitting bunnies for church or doing prep for Stitch and Chat it was there at the back of my mind, reminding me I should probably be working on it. I need to scale back and keep to achievable aims. Like these:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-ILWztVr0dOWrmrjRRYok312SzbuMW_0J3crrtFEmWG0FsJAq-ZfmrV_5T5Tx3n6tehd6SJPV7ggVajFUeJQ-R1oixgNMksh6je7a86mvlLYHro5wHK0ti5HrLiq9UlCFzBFO-O0BF50/s1600/P1120045.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-ILWztVr0dOWrmrjRRYok312SzbuMW_0J3crrtFEmWG0FsJAq-ZfmrV_5T5Tx3n6tehd6SJPV7ggVajFUeJQ-R1oixgNMksh6je7a86mvlLYHro5wHK0ti5HrLiq9UlCFzBFO-O0BF50/s1600/P1120045.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
...finally, vying with the bunnies for the title of 'cutest things I made since I blogged last', crocheted animals from the Toft Alpaca <a href="http://www.thetoftalpacashop.co.uk/Article_News_EdwardsMenagerieisreleasedintotheworld.aspx" target="_blank">book</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Emma made a lap quilt for the Golden Wedding Anniversary of some friends of her parents, and this weekend I quilted it for her: no time to wait around as the anniversary's in a week or so. The fabrics are in lovely spring-like colours, all very fresh. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyxX2tHR84daqJLmlcgRQgERanGxBlK_whJ4aJxe6RtC_LPVkiZ1IgHviRD3yufu_mckiv58QwYl4aA4uLrX3uT-B8NZZ9ZCoOiutK-_qmrF1iCtlKnNTnhGY87yHn-3lh0gHjMxZ6T8w/s1600/P1110937.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyxX2tHR84daqJLmlcgRQgERanGxBlK_whJ4aJxe6RtC_LPVkiZ1IgHviRD3yufu_mckiv58QwYl4aA4uLrX3uT-B8NZZ9ZCoOiutK-_qmrF1iCtlKnNTnhGY87yHn-3lh0gHjMxZ6T8w/s1600/P1110937.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The backing fabric is a coral batik, very luscious! You can see it here on the take-up roller. In the centre of the quilt is a foundation-pieced heart. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy7BXYelS6ktkuVFcTMP7l-b_EHwS-ELPpMl4EvCfeMDNFfVeK8mQGkBl3wwTX_Y5z8xOPvg_iynnbK5XAnKL5dNv8vrWka212_0641qAEawC-q3ZriGYow1T05RwaK1uyvkiKcI7o13o/s1600/P1110939.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy7BXYelS6ktkuVFcTMP7l-b_EHwS-ELPpMl4EvCfeMDNFfVeK8mQGkBl3wwTX_Y5z8xOPvg_iynnbK5XAnKL5dNv8vrWka212_0641qAEawC-q3ZriGYow1T05RwaK1uyvkiKcI7o13o/s1600/P1110939.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Emma asked for hearts in the quilting initially, but the fabrics are all
so heavily patterned that the quilting wasn't really showing up very
well. I changed to wiggly cross-hatching in the corners, curvy echo
quilting around the edges, a bit of custom work in the central block and
a large feather wreath on point in the main body of the quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGWLuMt6zm-O-L0BrrU2UNg4o9ctZ_TLkk6YxROu8Oi0OZM2L2rrHz4h9tLKgrBIc3JjBNFZi6XC3tNZiufMb6gglfFBqGYh6929EodINu_WSW6C6JXj8KUwDWIdu2sUcSxJ6DBu8hGUE/s1600/P1110942.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGWLuMt6zm-O-L0BrrU2UNg4o9ctZ_TLkk6YxROu8Oi0OZM2L2rrHz4h9tLKgrBIc3JjBNFZi6XC3tNZiufMb6gglfFBqGYh6929EodINu_WSW6C6JXj8KUwDWIdu2sUcSxJ6DBu8hGUE/s1600/P1110942.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In the early morning light the quilting shows up in relief very nicely here - it's a pity you usually have to look at the quilt from a funny angle to see it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUgkeFDHmbo9GZEZK7_kPTB-4NSBBDrFJI1Rlc7sHyJL8sNybDWw0mW_LK3_aE-o_SRiwRbDuSiQUpyt5DeH4ydUkiItuAcHuqi0tGKJA0ZhDnrL4krdxhEYUJ-WtapHXTs_C6CUomF7g/s1600/P1110945.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUgkeFDHmbo9GZEZK7_kPTB-4NSBBDrFJI1Rlc7sHyJL8sNybDWw0mW_LK3_aE-o_SRiwRbDuSiQUpyt5DeH4ydUkiItuAcHuqi0tGKJA0ZhDnrL4krdxhEYUJ-WtapHXTs_C6CUomF7g/s1600/P1110945.JPG" height="626" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The quilt's with Emma now, being bound in a hurry...<br />

Believe it or not, this quilt was started in Hong Kong thirty years ago. It came back to the UK as a patchwork top, in a carrier bag from Oliver's of Hong Kong, when its owner and her husband returned after two years there with the British army.</div>

It was pieced by a Chinese lady, partly on a treadle sewing machine, and contains fabrics from dresses belonging to Sandra and her little girls. For thirty years, it's been in its carrier bag in a wardrobe - until Sandra realised I had a quilting business, and asked me to quilt it for her.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
It's a substantial top, not least in size but also in the fabrics used - they aren't all patchwork cotton weight by any means, and some of the seam allowances defeated even my beast of a machine - there was a lot of swerving around the bulkier areas where several points meet!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQiiyrxgMQH6giYpTLF98MU-vLyCnramZWXGHvcJQytLdqr0i8Uz1sO74_lAKszrltXmxKmuKtv3jRd_i9Gl9lmUgI8WoF1bvEJbxdHEi_AYg5NcKHO3kou3jWp0r4hVJlV6QRHyEGc8Y/s1600/P1110901.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQiiyrxgMQH6giYpTLF98MU-vLyCnramZWXGHvcJQytLdqr0i8Uz1sO74_lAKszrltXmxKmuKtv3jRd_i9Gl9lmUgI8WoF1bvEJbxdHEi_AYg5NcKHO3kou3jWp0r4hVJlV6QRHyEGc8Y/s1600/P1110901.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
It also had a rather cavalier attitude to the notion of geometry - nothing was really straight, or perpendicular, or even matched up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Bt0UWpF9hj7p4GO2u0b8BgAWsIXhuYUCuWmyHt1v-2uk9_7JDDvIcoz5lg6kr7Uvzaq17aQUkkbo8NbhNNBEQHbEzUy0_iilCuGYrWaGRA-jm2K9Ab4ilg4bCuH5iNRGl53wotOZ8f0/s1600/P1110916.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Bt0UWpF9hj7p4GO2u0b8BgAWsIXhuYUCuWmyHt1v-2uk9_7JDDvIcoz5lg6kr7Uvzaq17aQUkkbo8NbhNNBEQHbEzUy0_iilCuGYrWaGRA-jm2K9Ab4ilg4bCuH5iNRGl53wotOZ8f0/s1600/P1110916.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
However, what the maker lacked in technical expertise she made up for in the lovely exuberant colours she chose for each tiny hourglass block: it really is a bright and cheery quilt that makes you smile.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDBuQ1MSV0fMW-h26KPMroLAWRHFk2tkwomfAGsCAvFimzRkRFyxxZ-nYSyaxAkCxx02IaOA3JIVCGRHUW8rgJqeUUYy63tLOUw5IDRZOAvHxshBuLMbtUWZfYFoshJP689RQck-poazk/s1600/P1110919.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDBuQ1MSV0fMW-h26KPMroLAWRHFk2tkwomfAGsCAvFimzRkRFyxxZ-nYSyaxAkCxx02IaOA3JIVCGRHUW8rgJqeUUYy63tLOUw5IDRZOAvHxshBuLMbtUWZfYFoshJP689RQck-poazk/s1600/P1110919.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This quilt was rather a labour of love. I had to repair a few patches and re-sew the odd seam before I started. The quilting pattern I originally chose had to be unpicked because the extra fullness in the quilt top really didn't agree with it, and I needed to re-think, unpick, and then select a pattern that allowed the fullness to go where it would... The odd angles meant that square corners weren't really an option, so after the go-ahead from Sandra I cut each corner on a curve before binding the edges of the quilt top with a faux-piped binding in complementary fabrics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

...only really become apparent when twenty people turn up for Stitch and Chat and you realise your kitchen table will fit on the end of your dining table. Living in a Vicarage means there are a lot of rooms to keep clean, but also that in those rooms you can squirrel away more chairs than you might realise, thus providing seats for lots of bottoms all at once! This was February's turnout. In January we had two dozen, so maybe I did something wrong and put four off this month? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Most people here are being good and making what they're suppoosed to be making, which was an embroidered key holder, but a rebel on the end here was making 6" crochet squares. We let her off, on the basis that she's set herself the target of making a thousand squares before the end of July to yarn bomb the school where she's a Governor for their centenary. In January I taught her how to crochet, so really this is quite a task. Don't worry, we're all helping her, she won't be making all one thousand on her own! <br />

<br />
Next month we're making the cute little mouse I showed you in January. I'm preparing lots of kits, just in case hoards turn up again, but there may be mice for sale in Donna Marie's if we have a wet and windy night and people stay home!<br />

<br />
For one Sandra at work (there seem to be many Sandras at work), a custom order. Sandra wanted a little house design embroidered and appliquéd in very pale shades of cream on a cushion cover.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizFsPny7RRdPpVOw1A2nZ6WzmE0XjEtYFhxz0zgeCssgdTtVLz9e0UOHU6DgxGvggB7flRtoaFDiepP84LWy17_EM0EzqKGaqXSu6jmurBp236CeJZ0357XmegFFoUqFSspfeeLtv-Hew/s1600/P1110898.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizFsPny7RRdPpVOw1A2nZ6WzmE0XjEtYFhxz0zgeCssgdTtVLz9e0UOHU6DgxGvggB7flRtoaFDiepP84LWy17_EM0EzqKGaqXSu6jmurBp236CeJZ0357XmegFFoUqFSspfeeLtv-Hew/s1600/P1110898.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My initial offerings of cream fabric being rather wide of the mark colour-wise, Sandra brought in an old table runner to show me exactly what she wanted. Coincidentally the runner was damaged and unusable, but it was perfect to cut up for the cushion! The pretty embroidered edging made a great flap to conceal the zip on the cushion back...<br />
<br />

For another Sandra, a little tease. A busy month has resulted in fewer finishes than normal - the programme is ready though for this year's Stitch and Chat meetings. In January there were 24 of us which was a bit of a squash - for some reason (showing two dozen people how to make Dorset buttons, perhaps...) I didn't think to take a picture of everyone but if February is as busy I will try to remember!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009990192590890302.post-67334867177493031172014-01-01T15:50:00.001+00:002014-01-01T15:50:12.153+00:00Happy 2014!<br />

Not sure where the Christmas posts went, sorry about that: hope you had a lovely time; we enjoyed time with family and the holiday has flown!<br />

Just before I started my new job (love my new job!) I visited Yarndale with a group of lovelies from our Stitch and Chat (spelt B*tch really but you can't put that on the Church notices) group, and came home with a gift from everyone, which was very kind of them all. Thank you lovelies! Of course, it's a gift that requires effort, so I'm happily crocheting away in my spare moments (seconds) - not sure if I'll have the scarf ready for this winter at this rate! </div>

The new job is full time. I believe I mentioned that would be the case in a <a href="http://www.vicaragequilts.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/changes.html" target="_blank">previous post</a>.<br />

Two lap quilts quilted too, a Golden Wedding Anniversary gift and a little pink girly quilt on which I seem to have quilted drunken butterflies. Oh well.</div>

So, six and a half weeks into my new job. More planning is equalling (not quite) as much sewing and making, but I'm getting a balance. Less dusting is happening though. Weird, huh?</div>

We had another workshop here at the weekend, which reminded me that I'd not blogged about the previous one - oops! In September three clever ladies spent a day at the Vicarage and went home having made an appliqué cushion top, quilted the top, and learnt how to insert a zip concealed behind a decorative flap on the back of the cushion. They all went home with a nice squishy cushion and feelings of accomplishment!<br />

<br />
I've always used a ironing board for all my patchwork-pressing needs: it didn't really occur to me to do anything else. Over the summer holidays I acquired a staple gun and had an idea, all in the same week - and now I'm the happy owner of a pressing table, that can double as a cutting table. I don't know how I managed without it, especially for pressing quilt tops and backings before quilting them - you can see in the last photograph that a width of fabric fits easily. I used a cheap Ikea table, tin foil, part of an old woollen blanket and cotton furnishing fabric. I tested the cover fabric carefully before using it of course, and it's fine with the heat of the iron. I did give myself staple-gunner's wrist making it, but it was worth it! It was a real boon at the cushion workshop we did last month too, although I scared the ladies about bondawebbing their appliqués onto it accidetnally, so we had to cover the cover! Pics of the workshop results coming up soon... <br />
Changes afoot in the Vicarage!<br />
<br />
For the last seven and a half years I've worked in the office of a local CofE Primary School. It's been a lovely time and I've made lots of great friends amongst the staff and also the parents of the school. I've worked three days a week, term time only, and so enjoyed a lot of free time to devote to Vicarage Quilts.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I start a new job, working for the Diocese, and it's full-time: no school holidays and five days a week. A big adjustment! I'm really excited about it but I think some things will have to change in the way I run my little business. I'm going to stop quilting big quilts for example (anything over a lap size), and whether or not I can take on commission quilts and banners will depend on what else is going on at the time. However, I'm carrying on with workshops and little makes, and small quilts.<br />
<br />
On Friday evening we had my leaving do at a local restaurant and I decided to make each colleague who joined me a little heart keyring to say thank you for - well, everything. I put their menu choices inside the cards, and used them as place markers. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTFOdpecT5i8zsswNf85ujJAzMsy7qUNZAaI-GCym03eYYtnckrRqDKTrYfJDObM7-MevKZrTDQhx2pWiOgECH-aLyxl2pDF1qOUKdGW0il2akCuo6RtgzTuC-2LyNB7GBpLcwd1zEUcg/s1600/P1110473.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTFOdpecT5i8zsswNf85ujJAzMsy7qUNZAaI-GCym03eYYtnckrRqDKTrYfJDObM7-MevKZrTDQhx2pWiOgECH-aLyxl2pDF1qOUKdGW0il2akCuo6RtgzTuC-2LyNB7GBpLcwd1zEUcg/s640/P1110473.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see, there were a lot of them, and I also made some for those who couldn't be there on the night. Surely it's normal to make thirty five keyrings in the last week of your job, when you're tying up all your loose ends and training up your replacement? No? That will be why I felt tired last week!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009990192590890302.post-85001634738365473702013-09-02T20:44:00.003+01:002013-09-02T20:44:59.371+01:00Using up scraps<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Over summer I had a tidying up urge - well, a clearing up / organising / streamlining urge really. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrcXyc_RG0pZraxdVrX8Y4ji2BiqTS85DDVYNYRZZy9vI8f2DLZwLl7cm_WOprLf2a2g6vmsDPL-_0x5JlAQ5rsfwzP3zZoRu8mN-VsznVseUU7HEGQNWbHsIx1SCijykFmwDF7-XnpIc/s1600/P1110402.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrcXyc_RG0pZraxdVrX8Y4ji2BiqTS85DDVYNYRZZy9vI8f2DLZwLl7cm_WOprLf2a2g6vmsDPL-_0x5JlAQ5rsfwzP3zZoRu8mN-VsznVseUU7HEGQNWbHsIx1SCijykFmwDF7-XnpIc/s640/P1110402.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided to make a concerted effort to put all the scraps of fabric that I can't throw away, to good use instead. Strips were cut...<br />

Here's Bev trying to hide behind her quilt. It came back to me, so I could quilt it for Bev. I had free rein, so I went for an all-over flower meander to complement the floral CK fabrics Bev had chosen.<br />

It's amazing how, once a quilt is quilted, it can look so different.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Now all Bev has to do is bind it. Go Bev!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009990192590890302.post-78767253004289512292013-08-01T11:30:00.001+01:002013-08-01T11:30:15.346+01:00Sheila's Fan Quilt<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Another custom quilting job recently completed : a stack-n-whack fan quilt. It was a giant quilt! It will look lovely on Sheila's bed. You can see in the picture above, how Sheila has carefully chosen the same portion of fabric from which to cut each fan blade, making a fascinating kaleidoscope effect.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii1jsyTZppB8SdAy2MbjaIOx9ndRJb4IKFhXqfgUZLk7ZBYcBBNZJ98C5D8hdVmGEbtgKKGgr0_cnnCuv6E6t3bExJrfZUc_iT4qthqguKrAgDzCuSGZAyInOJKTRLa2plKMzeFumEegY/s1600/Sheila+Gallimore+5.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii1jsyTZppB8SdAy2MbjaIOx9ndRJb4IKFhXqfgUZLk7ZBYcBBNZJ98C5D8hdVmGEbtgKKGgr0_cnnCuv6E6t3bExJrfZUc_iT4qthqguKrAgDzCuSGZAyInOJKTRLa2plKMzeFumEegY/s640/Sheila+Gallimore+5.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The brief was feathers: lots of feathers on all the white fabric, and swirls in the fans. Here you can see one of the setting triangles, and the lovely batik backing fabric Sheila had chosen peeping out at the sides. I ignored the block piecing seams and quilted a curved feather over each fan, extending all the way to the fans above it.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEYNOWa5iIv7weRsm6Y56R4UC4OtIOJdZxLV86-evuujtKI3Dsb3RD6URcQFexw2JbaXl0cuzdumMDvlVhGqP-0NV7OiG92mBMrBrbse67-u1yQYNaIqnOEo7R0uUUqze4Sx6z2h4D6bI/s1600/Sheila+Gallimore+24.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="394" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEYNOWa5iIv7weRsm6Y56R4UC4OtIOJdZxLV86-evuujtKI3Dsb3RD6URcQFexw2JbaXl0cuzdumMDvlVhGqP-0NV7OiG92mBMrBrbse67-u1yQYNaIqnOEo7R0uUUqze4Sx6z2h4D6bI/s640/Sheila+Gallimore+24.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Above is the quilt when it was still on the frame...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbT9QP5rAWoeN8q3zLT5iXETTifCgXUWZL3E3RBMGhHwEiv6E8wcP6zzaQjJeQeuaHL0usbf7GOCTQw48POzrOMevA2HWqhARrAT7Gf3ibHLEuJZav-YLx7ZZ_WLcoP5Z1GcMdhgv9T0s/s1600/Sheila+Gallimore+10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbT9QP5rAWoeN8q3zLT5iXETTifCgXUWZL3E3RBMGhHwEiv6E8wcP6zzaQjJeQeuaHL0usbf7GOCTQw48POzrOMevA2HWqhARrAT7Gf3ibHLEuJZav-YLx7ZZ_WLcoP5Z1GcMdhgv9T0s/s640/Sheila+Gallimore+10.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
...and here, spread out flat afterwards. You can see that it is a quilt with a really high loft, owing to the extremely puffy batting : I usually quilt on much flatter batting but it was no problem at all and gave a lovely effect. If you look carefully you can also see how different each fan is: because a different part of the fabric design was chosen for each set of fan blades, you get a lot of different patterns all from the same original fabric.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finished Sheila's quilt a while ago but it was going in the Congleton Show so I've waited to put photographs up on the website. It's rather nice revisiting a quilt I said goodbye to weeks ago!</div>

It didn't matter that the sun was shining, we were celebrating all things festive and making Christmas Tree Skirts. (Which, you know, are skirts for your Christmas tree rather than skirts for you with Christmas trees on them. You'd be surprised how many people don't know that...)<br />

We had the Christmas CDs playing, until the afternoon when it was time to listen to the Wimbledon Ladies' final on Radio 5 live.<br />

You might have noticed that every tree skirt has a pale, plain-ish fabric as one of the three: this is so that an embroidery design can be added at the end of every third blade. Here's the gift on mine, which I'd done ahead of time. Gill, Bev and Barbara all went home with their embroideries marked out ready to stitch - that's why you start your tree skirt in July - you need lots of time to have it finished by Christmas!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009990192590890302.post-61678565528870808382013-07-20T08:42:00.001+01:002013-07-20T08:43:28.683+01:00Summer sewing<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've recently quilted this bed size sampler quilt for Wendy. It's all in lovely calm shades and is a very restful sort of quilt to look at. While her husband had a cup of coffee and read his book, Wendy and I spent a long time deciding properly what to quilt everywhere and ultimately plumped for feathers in the two outer borders, a feather-swirl in the sashing and a variety of feather patterns in the blocks.</div>

I was really pleased with how it turned out. I still love the moment when the quilting's all finished, the ends of all the (hundreds in this quilt!) of thread ends are knotted and sewn in, the edges are neatly trimmed and I can spread the quilt out and have a proper look at it. Wendy's quilt certainly deserved a second look!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009990192590890302.post-7588168354216758472013-06-27T14:51:00.001+01:002013-06-27T14:51:31.128+01:00Little Ted's frog quilt<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

When Emma came to the Basic Patchwork workshop, she wanted to make a quilt for her nephew Ted's First Birthday, and chose the same fabrics I'd used for my sample - entirely understandable as they are such cute frogs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO51On6hnsssTx2mXUkjLnro9iKBMI-Y8KWdWEdCDo3HwQP6MmkA4wuTyBfOK41UGWOTSY0fiVt641Znen8sTtlXH1Jk-eIC8YrmrPD7Jkn7kTrhqZnJVx3fdrcWMJ_91FF7cIDhUdt-E/s1600/P1100711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO51On6hnsssTx2mXUkjLnro9iKBMI-Y8KWdWEdCDo3HwQP6MmkA4wuTyBfOK41UGWOTSY0fiVt641Znen8sTtlXH1Jk-eIC8YrmrPD7Jkn7kTrhqZnJVx3fdrcWMJ_91FF7cIDhUdt-E/s640/P1100711.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've now quilted the quilt for her, with 'frog toe' wiggles around each sash and the inner border, and meandering everywhere else.<br />

Mena opted for a cushion cover, to match a quilt she already has on her bed. She finished first and had to leave before the others, so I had to snap her alone in the garden!<br />

The Whit holiday was very productive. I've custom quilted two customer quilts. One is going in a show in July so I can't show you that yet, and the other is still on the frame with two rows of ends tied off and buried and the other three rows still waiting - pictures to follow if my customer doesn't mind! </div>

I've made some more bits and bobs for Donna's shop too. Four lengths of bunting...</div>

...and age / lettered brooches, but this time on cards. In the supermarket a couple of weeks ago I saw a lady doing her shopping, wearing a 'Birthday Girl' brooch, and had to restrain myself from accosting her excitedly and telling her I'd made it - why I should be surprised that someone out there would have something of mine, when I know full well they're for sale at Donna's, I really don't know!</div>

self-publication was required.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Phew!<br />

First up was foundation piecing.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>A nice gentle start with two participants, and we learnt the basics of
foundation piecing and then made a bag. I forgot to take photographs, but luckily the same people came to the second workshop with their bags, thus explaining the identical clothing in the photos above and below!<br />

there were three ladies (and a half including the daughter of one, who made a

This month has been the biggest project to date, a cot / lap quilt in a
day on the basic patchwork class. Four participants at the class on 1st June, and I'll be repeating this class again next Saturday with four more taking part.<br />

<br />
May's task was to finish this quilt. Kind of exhausted myself working out *how* to make it, and how much fabric I needed in order to make it, as you can see from the scribbles above...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjugdu9_ttqrApMn3ZIIuxKl5Oq3VgZdfQP33W-2e4r-9jiqYvITEIaUM_LzNQNbYDqHiB9YWxNtQ8eRomPKLTWLoQ5sxK3pMF7Jb21r0bRXktywYuw1oRSGdHOdAfuhJZY4t91mUVybUQ/s1600/P1100309.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="348" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjugdu9_ttqrApMn3ZIIuxKl5Oq3VgZdfQP33W-2e4r-9jiqYvITEIaUM_LzNQNbYDqHiB9YWxNtQ8eRomPKLTWLoQ5sxK3pMF7Jb21r0bRXktywYuw1oRSGdHOdAfuhJZY4t91mUVybUQ/s400/P1100309.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the start of May it looked like the picture above, lots of piles of different size strips ready to be sewn together seminole style and cross cut. No walking across the sewing room carpet, for fear of disturbing the fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here we are, 28th already and only the top and bottom thirds are done! The carpet in the sewing room got c-o-v-e-r-e-d in little red and white threads...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In my defence, I have also quilted one teeny and two huge customer quilts (well, the second one will definitely be finished before I eat my lunch today), made most of a banner for a local Church, and run a workshop. And am running another this Saturday. And worked three days a week. And took my Mum to a quilt show (where she bought me a 10<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";">º</span> wedge ruler and gave me her cold. The ruler's ace though, so I'm letting her off the cold.) So, you know, May's productivity's not too bad really.</div>

She’d decided on all-over feather meander, which I love quilting – you need
to keep your wits about you though, so you don’t end up quilting yourself into
a corner!<br />

Lesley chose a thread to match the plain linen fabric.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I haven’t quilted any linen before, and I did
really like the effect.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Maybe I’ll be
making a linen quilt in the future?<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Just after I’d taken the quilt off the frame I dropped a bobbin on the
floor behind the quilt frame, and as I was scrabbling around trying to find it,
I noticed the effect of the light from the window coming through the needle
holes on the quilt.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You can see the seam allowances of the quilt top too, if you look
carefully - hold a quilt top up to the light and the seam allowances are
like the leading in a stained glass window. (Don’t be alarmed –
the holes disappear!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Longarm machines use
fairly sturdy needles, so they withstand the hammering they get in an
industrial machine.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Immediately after
you’ve quilted a top you can see the holes when you hold a quilt up to the
light, but they close up soon afterwards!) </div>
